Intermediate Foursomes V St Annes.
Sutton V St Annes. Thursday 25th April 2024.
This new format was initially a challenge as our established pairings, following a very successful campaign in 2023 were no longer an option. A huge amount of practise time to establish new partnerships was undertaken by whole panel and both Catherine and myself are grateful for their commitment.
Alison Newman and Nicola Hunter were first out in St Annes against tough opposition, playing steady golf they turned a two down deficit to A/S on 15th hole. They halved 16 and won 17 needing only a half to secure a fantastic win which turned out to be crucial.
Next out were Jean Farrell and Odette O’Dea again facing tough opposition. They lost two holes early on but by the tenth they were 2 up. Winning streak continued and they won comfortably on the 15th following a career shot out of the rough by Odette with a 5 iron.
On a rainy first tee our two Sutton pairings got off to a flying start. Joan Kelly and Bernadette O’ Brien continued in that frame for more holes but St Annes eventually got their A game going and made it a very exciting finish with a halved match.
Alice Kenny and Leona O’Byrne were steady all the way through but got very hot coming out of the field and had a superb win on the 15th with amazing putting.
Phone calls were hotting up between Catherine and myself and when news came through that Alison and Nicola had turned their match around we could breathe. Matchplay is a funny thing and we saw it all today. Most important lesson is to never give up!
Many thanks to all concerned and we look forward to another successful outcome in the next round.
