Irish Mixed Foursomes V Roganstown

The SGC team for the Irish Mixed Foursomes got their campaign off to a winning start on Sunday following a great performance against a tough Roganstown team. Starting with the home pairings, on a tough, windy, linksy day in Sutton, Shane McGlynn and Gail McDermott got off to a fast start when their opponents lost a ball off the first tee, and they built from there through a combination of great golf and cunning strategy – their plan for the 13th hole was an iron off the tee, then a 15-foot putt, then a full 9-iron to the green, and then another 15-foot putt to win the hole – to dispatch their opposition 5&3.

Playing behind them, Simon Russell and Leona O’Byrne also started fast and through solid error-free golf stayed in control of their game to also win with holes to spare.

Over in Roganstown, our first pair was a last-minute partnership including Sam Kelly and Nicola Hunter. In what I am sure was a first for each of them they were drawn to play against the Irish One- Armed golf champion, Cian Arthurs, and his mother. Cian is an extraordinary athlete, playing off 3 handicap despite his disability and he represents Ireland with distinction all over the world. Cian is a long-hitter and he and his mother played lovely golf from the outset to stay ahead of our pair who also played well.

In our final match, however, the news was good from early on. Luke O’Reilly and Stephanie McCarthy were level par for the first 6 holes by which time they were four up. Their match evened out somewhat from there, and their opponents put in a great effort to catch up, but Sutton wins at 13 and 14 were enough to restore a comfortable gap and from there they closed out for a fantastic win.

All four SGC pairs did really well and it was great to get the campaign off to such a good start. The team also appreciated all those who came out to support, both home and away. Next up is another tough match against Corrstown, currently scheduled for July 6 th at 4.00pm.
