Leinster Men's Trophy
Round 2 Report
We played Round 2 of the Leinster Men’s Trophy against Portmarnock GC on Saturday 18th May. Formidable opposition at the best of times. On the day, Portmarnock took advantage of their home draw, got off to an early lead in most of the games and unfortunately we were unable to stage a comeback. The overall score of 5-2 in Portmarnock’s didn’t really reflect the the fine margins in individual matches, most notably in match 3 in Sutton which was a battle between the hurler and the footballer and what a battle it turned out to be!
The manager of the Portmarnock team took time out from a wedding that he was attending in Portugal to phone and acknowledge both the sporting nature in which all of the games were played and the fact it had been reported back to him that putts had dropped all day for his team.
While disappointing to lose, there were a lot of positives, not least the commitment from this panel in representing Sutton GC in interclub golf. The panel was a good mix of more “experienced” players and a number of up and coming players. We will be reading a lot more about many of these players in the future.
The team that played Portmarnock was Derek Hunter, Stephen Gallagher, Danny Buckley, Niall Kennedy, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Dermot McMurray and John Lally.
Thank you to each of the players on the panel, to the caddies and to those who came out and supported the team.
