Senior Cup Qualifying at Castleknock

Sutton are back in Senior Cup Qualifying after a long absence.

Sunday, 30th June 2024 was a significant milestone for Sutton Golf Club, fielding a Senior Cup team for the Qualifying round for the first time in many years. This is the highest level of Interclub golf in Ireland and having a competitive team of the requisite standard is crucial for the ongoing development of our club. Sutton must continue give our top players the opportunity to test themselves against the very best and this is the first step on that journey.

To play “Senior” for your club in any code is special and the players selected were a credit to both themselves and Sutton in how they represented our club in Castleknock. To put things somewhat in context, we had an aggregate handicap index of 10 which was the 3rd highest of the 16 clubs in the field. The heavyweights of Castleknock, Royal Dublin, Portmarnock and The Island each had 5 “plus” handicap players with current International players in abundance.

Our team of Paddy Lennon, Philip Higgins, Sam Kelly, Bruno Lupo and Shane McGlynn finished a very respectable 9th with the clubs mentioned above, not surprisingly, taking the four qualification spots on offer. However, based on “net” scores we were the 4th best team which is more reflective of the relative performances – huge well done to the players!

To see Sutton out competing in such exalted company was a privilege and the many supporters who made the trip were treated to some superb golf all round. Thanks to all of them and also the caddies and subs who came out to lend a hand.

Onwards!
