Sutton Super Seniors beat Portmarnock in their R2 Match!

On a very cold, very wet, very windy Monday morning, eight Sutton stalwarts donned their wet gear, bid farewell to their manager, and headed for the 1st tee, four of them at home, and four away at Portmarnock Golf Club.

Their mission? Try to improve on our 1st match results against Baltray where we had lost 3 matches and won only one, and take as many points as possible from our dear neighbours in Portmarnock.

Their manager congratulating himself on not making the team on this particular occasion headed home, windscreen wiper working overtime, for hot coffee and a read of the newspaper. Fortunately the weather improved a little, and nobody suggested making early concessions or deciding the match over 9 holes, although I learned afterwards that somebody in the opposition wondered whether we could decide it on the putting green.

In fairness they all ploughed on and eventually, about four and a half hours later they arrived safely back to their respective clubhouses.

In Portmarnock Dave O’Neill and Joe Comyn had won 5&4 and, not to be outdone, Tony Higgins and Dermot Cahillane won theirs 5&4. A fantastic “Away” result!

At home Alan Levey and Declan O’Callaghan won their match 3&1. Doc Taylor and Cathal Saunders had a very tight match, and came down the 18th one down. With the opposition close to the flag for a par, Cathal Saunders sank a slippery 15/20 footer for a birdie to win the hole and halve the match.

Overall I couldn’t have wished for more, a great result for us against strong opposition. Now we must await the results of other matches in our group to see where we stand before we play our next match against The Island on April 8th.
