Uden Cup V Donabate

Sutton began their quest for Uden Cup glory on Sunday.

Match 1 Cian Bennis & David Walsh Stormed to a 3 up lead through 3 and never really looked back. Cian holing out some fantastic putts & David playing some clinical approaches to the greens. On the day this dynamic duo were just to hot to handle closing out 5&4.

Match 2 Noel O’Halloran & Michael O’Halloran, the Batman & Robin of the team. Game plan was simple here ‘Steady Eddie’ Michael would go first to hit the fairways, to allow the Younger Powerhouse O’Halloran play more aggressively. The strategy paid off the brothers won a comfortable 5&4, with Noel coming in with a couple of birdies around the turn to seal the deal.

Match 3, Aidan McWilliams & Joe Kelly, the Old Wise Owl paired with Bazooka Joe (I believe Mr O Driscoll Came up with this name).

Aidan used all his experience to guide his younger Less experienced partner around the Terrain of Cush Point. They were off to a slow start losing the first but hung in the match over the first 5 holes to turn it around and cruise to a 5&4 Victory.

I’d like to quote Bazooka Joe, I asked him what it was like playing with a man so experience, he said “Very Enjoyable, ball above the feet in the rough and takes out driver, didn’t need to even think about it, not something many could pull off as seamless as he did”.

Match 4 Bryan Coughlan & Larry Brennan were in a battle from the get go out in donabate against a very experience pair. This was a game that involved some of the finest short game, Donabate holed a sublime chip in on the 10th and against all the odds, Larry followed him in from off the green - a pair of chip ins to half the hole!

The Sutton duo dug deep and where 1 up on the fairway when they were called in. Match 5 James Kelly & Brian Digan battled hard in tough conditions, in a topsy turvey match where the standard was of the highest level. The lads were called in 1 Down, but in good shape to get back to All square on the 15th Hole.

Thanks to my Assistant Manager Bruno, who when I asked him for some advice and how to tell the Captain Cian how to avoid Shanking the ball, he told me to tell Cian to stand further away from the ball. He then asked me what the score was in Cian’s game, I told him he was 3up his response was tell him to keep shanking it so!

Thank you to the subs and everyone who came out and supported. We have the pleasure of playing on the Earl of Howth’s grounds in the next round. (Deerpark)
