Match Reports

Sutton deliver a decisive victory over Howth, who retained the Wooden Spoon, with a strong back-to-back victory for Sutton.

Having defeated Howth in their own back yard in 2022, Howth came down to Sutton on a pleasant Sunday afternoon gunning to hand the dreaded Wooden Spoon back to Sutton. Howth arrived with a team loaded with no less than 9 low single handicaps designed to do just that!

In customary fashion, the Sutton team were led out in match 1 of 11 by our Captain James and vice-captain Cian. Their opposition were Howth vice-captain Tom Turley who was paired with past Captain Charles Stewart. Howth Captain John Clancy was unable to attend, due to work commitments. In hindsight an extremely perceptive move on John’s behalf. Match 1 set the tone for the day with a fine victory delivered by the gentlemen occupying the Sutton ‘C’ Suite 10 more matches ensued in this highly competitive but enjoyable scotch foursome’s format. One by one the Sutton pairings competed, and, in the end, a dominant victory delivered by team Sutton. Of the 11 matches, 8 wins, 2 draws and just a single loss. A remarkable day, with Howth management scratching their heads as to what to do in 2024 when Sutton return in 2024.

Sutton have the gloating rights for 2023 but will need to be on our guard for sure next year. The objectives for the day as always are to send Howth home with the Wooden Spoon and equally importantly to enjoy the evening and have a social evening with our nearest neighbours Howth GC. Sam Kelly and his intermediate squad did us equally proud with a victory over Howth in Howth GC, before all joined up for dinner before also handing the Sindy Spoon to manager Brendan Smith for the second year in a row! Well done Sam and team.

Tom O’Gorman and the victorious Uden team also joined, and a great night was enjoyed by all. A fantastic meal was served, with the Howth team to a man highly complimentary of not just the Sutton Golf course on the day but also the hospitality and welcome they received at the club. A big thanks to Gary and all the clubhouse staff for a job well done. Another fantastic day for Sutton Golf club.
