Barton Cup V Bellewstown
Sutton started and ended their quest on May 5th.
A tough draw with 3 away in Bellewstown. Memories of a close but unsuccessful last match on 19th, a foray in the mixed in 2024 when we lost 3-2 was sadly the same in BC 24.
For some reason not fully comprehendible Sutton GC is in North Leinster while all our neighbours are in Leinster Central. This means we have the potential to draw clubs like Bellewstown and with 3 away on a course not best known to us and greens that bobble, it was always going to be a tough ask.
Sutton in my opinion fielded a strong and capable team.
It was a glorious golfing day with sunshine and a nice breeze on the Sutton Coast.
Home
Shane McGlynn and Conor O'Leary who won comfortably 4/3
Stephen Moriarty and James Bowen who after a slow front nine turned up the heat on back nine wining 3/1
Away was always going to be a challenge on a tough course with somewhat dodgy greens not to the standard provided by Simon Lewis and his team at Sutton.
It was an epic struggle matches fluctuated back and forth over the course of the day and late it looked ominous but a sterling fight back from Ben Logan and Derek Hunter from 3 down with 3 to play wining last 3 holes to get match to the 19th gave us some hope.
Match two Simon Lewis and Joe Kelly after a slow start leaving an uphill battle fought valiantly to sadly succumb on 17th, 2/1
Match 3 John Aherne and John Carroll had an epic match which again fluctuated back and forth and we had great hope as we were 1 up playing 18 sadly, we lost the 18th and tie holes were needed.
Tie Holes
Ben and Derek and the two Johns sadly both lost the 19th and the BC run (crawl) was sadly over for 2024
The match home and away was played in the true golfing spirit with no issues and great sportsmanship My thanks to the Panel who put in a good effort. Bellewstown fielded a strong team and were a pleasure to deal with in arranging the match.
To all the members both home and away thankyou for your support the team appreciated seeing some friendly faces. Thanks to Captain Cian at SGC and Vice Larry at BGC for their support. Sincere thanks to Gary and his team for an excellent dinner afterwards all who attended complemented the quality of the food and service.
Jamie behind the bar helped us lick our wounds until late in the night.
Both Tom Shanahan and myself were gutted with the result we really believed we could win a match away but sadly this was not the case. If I never see Bellewstown Golf Club again it will be too soon and that is nothing to do with their Captain and players who were all very nice.
