O’Grady Cup V Swords
The O’Grady Cup team had a brief but very exciting campaign this year, bowing out at the first hurdle against a very strong Swords team.
Things were always going to be difficult at the away venue, which is a relatively unknown course - apparently it’s a suburb of Roganstown Golf Club. The pairings of Sam Brennan/Ann Marie Fox and Gordon Linehan/Shona Leyden battled hard but home advantage was key and the matches were lost on 17 and 16 respectively. A valiant effort nonetheless.
First up in Sutton were Captain Jean Tierney and husband Paul who were in scintillating form, winning their first 6 holes and cruising to a 7up victory. Apparently Jean has had Paul on a strict training regime for the past few weeks and it certainly did the trick! David Carson and Mairead Hughes were in similar mood, also dispatching their opponents with ease 6up. Unfortunately, the third match didn’t go our way with Dermot McMurray and Niamh Costello coming up against a very strong pair and despite putting up a great fight were ultimately defeated on the 16th hole.
All of the team can be very proud of their efforts and as always there was great support from the membership, our course team was in superb condition and the matches were played in a very sporting manner.
